Understanding Your Choices
If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, you may be considering abortion. Maybe you’re worried about how this will affect your future, your relationships, or your plans. It’s normal to want quick answers, but it’s also essential to understand what abortion involves before choosing that option.
At New Life Care Center, our goal is for you to be informed and protected as you determine what’s next for you and to help you access important medical care and education that will empower you to make the best decision.
Two Main Types of Abortion
Learning the differences between abortion methods can help you make an informed choice.
Medical Abortion
Medical abortion, also referred to as the chemical abortion pill, involves two drugs designed to end an early pregnancy. This method is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation only.
- The first drug, mifepristone, stops the pregnancy from growing by blocking progesterone.
- The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the product of conception (POC). This will cause cramping and bleeding, which can be severe.
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever or chills
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Possible risks include:
- Infection
- Digestive issues
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding
- Incomplete abortion (sometimes requiring surgical intervention)
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion procedures use tools, suction, medication, or a combination of these methods to end a pregnancy. The method used depends on factors like how far along a woman is in her pregnancy. The further along she is, the more complex the procedure.
Typical side effects may include:
- Cramping
- Spotting or light bleeding
Possible risks include:
- Damage to the cervix
- Infection
- Uterine perforation
- Scar tissue that may affect fertility
It’s important to also consider the emotional side effects of abortion.
Before Making a Decision
No matter which method you’re considering, you should schedule an ultrasound to confirm:
- That you are pregnant
- How far along you are
- Whether the pregnancy is in the uterus
- Whether the pregnancy is viable (progressing and has a heartbeat)
New Life Care Center is now accepting appointments for limited on-site obstetric ultrasounds and self-administered pregnancy tests to help you get these answers. We also provide time to talk with a compassionate advocate who will walk through your questions and help you feel grounded as you consider your options.
