What Ultrasounds Show

Ultrasounds use sound waves to produce a picture of what’s happening inside your body. This imaging provides three critical details that a pregnancy test cannot confirm:

Viability

Is the pregnancy developing? Is there a heartbeat? Many pregnancies end naturally in early miscarriage, so confirming viability may help you avoid making decisions based on incomplete information.

Gestational Age

How far along are you? The gestational age matters because your options may change depending on your stage of pregnancy. For example, medical abortion (the abortion pill) is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks gestation.

Location

Is the pregnancy in the uterus? Rarely, a pregnancy implants in the fallopian tube (ectopic pregnancy), which requires immediate medical care and cannot be resolved through abortion pills.
